What is a countdown timer widget?

A countdown timer widget is a small box on your website that shows how much time is left until a moment you choose: the end of a sale, a product launch, a webinar, a wedding or New Year's Eve. The numbers tick down in real time, so visitors see at a glance how many days, hours, minutes and seconds remain.

With the WebToolsMe countdown timer you set the date, time and time zone, give it a heading, match the colors to your site and copy a single line of HTML code. There is no plugin to install and no account to create: the free countdown clock works on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Blogger or any HTML page.

Popular ways to use a countdown on your site

A visible deadline helps people decide and plan. These are the most common reasons site owners embed a countdown timer:

  • Sales and promotions: Black Friday, Cyber Monday, a holiday sale or a limited coupon. A clear end time encourages shoppers to act.
  • Product and website launches: build anticipation for a new release, an app launch or a "coming soon" page.
  • Events and webinars: conferences, live streams, online classes and ticket sales that close at a set time.
  • Holidays: New Year, Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving or the start of summer.
  • Personal milestones: weddings, birthdays, graduations and retirements on personal blogs.
  • Deadlines: application windows, early-bird pricing and registration cut-offs.

How to embed the countdown timer (HTML code)

Set the date and design above, then press Copy code. You get a short HTML snippet: paste it where the countdown should appear and follow the steps for your platform:

  1. In the page or post editor, add a Custom HTML block.
  2. Paste the code into the block.
  3. Update or publish the page.

Time zones: one moment for everyone, or local time?

Most deadlines are a single moment in time. If your sale ends at midnight in New York, a visitor in London should see the timer reach zero at 5 a.m. their time, not at their own midnight. For these, choose the time zone where the deadline is set, for example America/New_York or Europe/London. Every visitor then counts down to exactly the same instant, and daylight saving time is taken into account automatically.

Some moments happen locally everywhere. New Year's Eve, for example, arrives at midnight in each visitor's own time zone. For these, choose each visitor's own time and the countdown uses the clock on the visitor's device.

Tips for countdowns that convert

  • Write a heading that says what happens at zero: "Sale ends in", "Doors open in", "Launch in".
  • Use real deadlines. Fake timers that reset on every visit damage trust, and in many countries consumer law treats false urgency as a misleading practice.
  • Hide seconds for long countdowns of several weeks; show them for the last day to create a sense of momentum.
  • Place the timer near your call to action, such as the "Buy now" or "Register" button.
  • Set a finish message so the widget stays useful after the deadline, for example "Registration is closed. See you next year!".

Lightweight and privacy-friendly

The countdown timer is one small script. After it loads, it never contacts a server again: the remaining time is calculated in the visitor's browser every second. It sets no cookies, collects no data and runs inside its own sealed box, so it cannot break your theme and your theme cannot break it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the countdown timer free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark beyond a small source link and no limit on the number of sites.

Can I add a countdown timer without a plugin?

Yes. Copy the HTML code and paste it into a Custom HTML block (WordPress), an Embed element (Wix, Squarespace) or directly into your page's HTML.

What happens when the countdown ends?

The timer stops at zero and shows your finish message, or a default message if you leave it empty.

Will every visitor see the same time left?

Yes, if you choose a specific time zone. If you choose each visitor's own time, the timer counts down to the same clock time in every time zone.

Can I use it for an evergreen countdown that restarts for each visitor?

No. The widget counts down to a real date only, which keeps your promotions honest.

How do I change the date later?

Come back to this page, set the new date and replace the old code with the new one.
