What is an IP address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the number given to every device or network connected to the internet. When you open a website, the request leaves from this address and the reply comes back to it. Your router at home, or your mobile carrier, gives you a public IP address, while devices on your home network use private addresses such as 192.168.x.x.

This page answers what is my IP address instantly: it shows your public IP, whether it is IPv4 or IPv6, your internet provider and the approximate location the IP is registered to. You can also look up any other IP address or domain.

How to look up an IP address

  • Your own IP: it appears as soon as the page opens; copy it with one click.
  • Another IP address: type an IPv4 (e.g. 8.8.8.8) or IPv6 address and press “Look up”.
  • A domain: type example.com; the domain is resolved to its IP address and its details are shown.
  • Shareable link: the lookup is added to the address bar, so anyone you send the link to sees the same result.

What information is shown?

  • IP version and address type: IPv4 / IPv6, public or private.
  • Approximate location: country, region, city and coordinates; the city centre is shown on Google Maps.
  • Time zone and local time where the IP address is located.
  • Internet provider and ASN: the carrier or organisation that manages the address.
  • Reverse DNS: the hostname linked to the address, if any.
  • Browser details: browser, operating system, languages, screen resolution, time zone and user agent, read only on your device.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP location is an estimate. The country is almost always right; the city usually reflects where your provider's network connects, so seeing a nearby larger city is normal, especially on mobile data. An IP address does not reveal your home or work address; the map only marks the city centre.

Location data comes from the DB-IP database, updated monthly. Providers sometimes move address blocks between cities, so a result can be a few weeks out of date.

Private IP, public IP and CGNAT

Addresses starting with 192.168, 10 or 172.16–31 are private IP addresses: they only work inside a local network and have no location. Your router translates them all into one public IP address on the internet. Some carriers put many subscribers behind a shared public IP (100.64.x.x, CGNAT), which means nobody can connect to you directly from outside.

IPv6 has so many addresses that devices usually get a public address directly. If your connection supports IPv6, you will see your IPv6 address on this page.

Is my VPN working?

With a VPN or proxy turned on, websites see the IP address of the VPN server instead of yours. If the country and city on this page match the location you chose in your VPN, it is working. The page also compares your browser's time zone with the IP location and tells you when they differ, a common sign that a VPN is in use.

Privacy

The IP addresses and domains you look up are not logged. Location data is read from a database on our own server and is not sent to any other service. Browser details are shown only on your device. The map is loaded from Google Maps, so viewing it connects to Google.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my IP address keep changing?

Most home and mobile connections use a dynamic IP; your provider can assign a new one when the router restarts or the connection renews. A static IP is usually a paid service.

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

No. IP location is approximate and city-level. Only your provider knows which subscriber used an address, and shares it only through legal process.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses look like 8.8.8.8 and have run out. IPv6 addresses such as 2001:db8::1 are much longer and provide an almost unlimited number of addresses.

Why does this page show the wrong city?

Location is estimated from where the provider registered the address block. On mobile data and corporate networks the city often differs, while the country is usually correct.

How do I find a website's IP address?

Type the domain (e.g. example.com) into the lookup box; its IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and their location are shown.

How can I hide my IP address?

A VPN, a proxy or Tor shows websites a different IP address. Switching to mobile data also changes your IP.
