What is an online timer?

An online timer counts down the time you set right in your browser and plays an alarm when it reaches zero. You see the time left in large digits while you work, teach or cook, without reaching for your phone.

Start one of the presets with a single click, or type the hours, minutes and seconds yourself. There's nothing to install and no account to create, and it works the same on phones, tablets and computers.

How to set the timer

  • Pick a preset: click 1, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, or 1 hour, and the timer starts right away.
  • Or type it in: click the hours, minutes and seconds boxes, enter the time and press Start. The up and down arrow keys change the values too.
  • Choose a sound: pick an alarm sound on the right and press ▶ to hear it first.
  • Pause, resume, add a minute: stop and continue at any time, or add one more minute while it runs.
  • When time is up: the alarm plays for one minute. Silence it with Stop alarm or the space bar.

What people use it for

  • Study and exams: practice tests, timed problem sets and study breaks.
  • Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5-minute break.
  • Kitchen timer: boiled eggs, tea, pasta or a cake in the oven.
  • Workouts: planks, stretching, intervals and rest periods.
  • Meetings and classrooms: speaking time, group work and activities.
  • Everyday tasks: parking meters, laundry, medicine reminders or a quick nap.

Alarm sounds

There are six alarm sounds: classic bell, digital alarm, beep, bell, chime and a gentle tone that slowly gets louder. You can set the volume separately. The sounds are generated in your browser, so there are no audio files to download and the page loads fast.

When time is up the sound plays for one minute, the digits turn red and the tab title flashes "Time's up!". Turn on notifications to see the alert even while you work in another window.

Tips for a reliable timer

  • You can switch to other tabs: the time is kept accurately in the background and the sound plays on time. Just don't close this tab.
  • If your computer or phone goes to sleep, the sound may not play. With "Keep the screen on" enabled the screen stays awake.
  • On phones, silent mode and media volume affect the alarm. Check the volume before long timers.
  • Your last time, sound and volume are remembered in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is the online timer free?

Yes. It's completely free, with no sign-up and no app needed.

Does the timer stop if I switch tabs?

No. The time is based on the real clock and the alarm sound is scheduled in advance, so it plays on time even when you're in another tab.

What's the longest time I can set?

Up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

I can't hear the alarm. What should I do?

Check your device volume and the volume slider, and press ▶ to test the sound. On phones, turn off silent mode.

Can I share a timer link?

Yes. Add ?t= and a number of seconds to the address, for example ?t=300 for 5 minutes.
